Juneteenth of Asheville, the day we celebrate freedom for all respectfully. For those who didn't kno Juneteenth is one of the oldest African American holiday. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865. Juneteenth's commemoration is on the anniversary date of the June 19, 1865, announcement of General Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger, proclaiming freedom for slaves in Texas, which was the last state of the Confederacy with institutional slavery. In Asheville we been celebrating this holiday since we were educated in 2010-2022 10+ years celebration which start in Hillcrest apartments by a group of community leaders and the help of community programs that was put in place to help understand where we came from. This celebration brings healing, togetherness, unity, and education within our black community. A day where we all come together to make our city a better place, white, black, Hispanics, Asians, and other ethnic groups come together to celebrate freedom for all!!! This day represents the growth of our nation as a whole, which lead to being now a national holiday announced by our president in 2021 lead by Asheville, NC!!! Juneteenth of Asheville will be celebrating yet once again on a larger scale downtown asheville Juneteenth weekend, come 1 come all!!! Its a celebration for the ages!!!!
